IT WAS 100 YEARS OLD IN 2022!

The Woodpecker Trail is one of the oldest tourist routes in the U.S. and turned 100 years old in 2022! It began as the Woodpecker Route in the early 1920’s (although there are references back to before then). In 1922 it was listed in the Automobile Legal Association’s "Automobile Green Book." The description at that time was from Augusta, Georgia to Lake City & Jacksonville, Florida. Much of the general line of travel is still followed. It is thought that the Great Depression may have reduced people's financial abilities to travel to the extent that the route was no longer used.

An excellent way to experience the Woodpecker Trail is to spend a day driving it north of Metter, Georgia and then spend a day driving it south. We've created two maps of great places to stop along the way. It's a wonderful way to experience the beauty and serenity of rural Georgia -- and the Woodpecker Trail. The Woodpecker Trail has been named one of the 50 most scenic drives in America.

Have you ever traveled this ol' trail
Quaint towns and cotton bales.

Highway 121 is your welcome mat,
The deep south, that's where it's at.

From the Carolinas to Florida and Georgia in-between
We're from the South, if you know what I mean.

Flat lands, rolling hills, and amber waves of grain
North and South directions forever remain.

Back in time to 1947,
A (then) way of life designed in heaven...
